  Julia Malakie for City Council

Julia Malakie
Ward Councilor
Ward 3

• Prevent out-of-scale development. The most consequential vote of the current 2022-2023 term will be on Village Center Zoning. A vote will occur by December 31, since VC Zoning is being used to satisfy the state's MBTA Communities directive for Newton to zone for by-right development of 8,330 units near transit.  In the next term (2024-2025) the Planning Department and City Council are expected to resume consideration of new Residential District zoning, that was put on the back burner during the 2019 election period.  I will only support zoning changes that discourage teardowns and displacement, and preserve green space and trees -- not zoning redesigned to benefit developers.

• Protect our environment by enhancing tree canopy and strengthening tree protection ordinances, more important than ever with hotter summers and extreme rainfalls. Reduce wasteful teardowns.

• Improve recreation options for all ages: parks, playing fields & open spaces, expedited Gath Pool improvements, and new Senior Center.

• Help seniors, middle-class families, and local businesses stay in Newton.

• Protect our historic assets. I led landmarking of West Newton Square’s two most iconic buildings, the Davis Hotel and the Robinson Block.
